Questions for Learning (QfL) – Grammar

Questions for Learning (QfL) uses electronic handheld ActivExpression devices, on which children receive sets of questions that they answer at their own pace. Both the child and the teacher receive feedback about how they answer the questions, and at what rate. Support or extra challenges can then be tailored appropriately to children who need it. The question sets were devised by Learning Clip (see below).

Following on from the positive outcome of a study of Self-Paced Learning (SPL) in mathematics in 2010/11, we evaluated the use of QfL as part of grammar teaching in Year 5 literacy lessons. The core study was a 42-school delayed treatment randomised control group design. An additional 16 schools already using ActivExpression participated as a matched sample.

Findings were very positive, particularly where the programme was implemented three or more times per week, and for low- and average-achieving pupils. If these results held over a school year, low- and average-achieving pupils would make between three and four months of additional progress. The teacher and pupil surveys conveyed highly positive responses to the use of QfL. Both teachers and pupils enjoyed using the strategy for formative assessment, believed it improved pupil achievement in grammar, and would recommend its use for other pupils and for other subjects. The IEE has also conducted a research study to evaluate the use of QfL to support pupils’ learning in maths lessons.

In Self-Paced Learning questions are delivered to pupils on the screen of their ActivExpression handset; their answer can be submitted as text, numeric or multiple-choice, and are sent back to the teacher’s computer.

As soon as a pupil has answered, the next question will appear on their screen. Children who are more confident or able can work at a quicker pace, while those who need more time to answer will feel less pressured to keep up and are able to respond discretely.

No marking is required and teachers save preparation time by simply logging on to the Learning Clip website and choosing from a bank of prepared activities and questions. The Learning Clip system collects and marks the answers providing instant feedback to pupils, and a detailed snapshot of the class’s performance for the teacher.

Learning Clip is a privately-owned limited company established in 2007 to produce online resources for teaching primary maths. The company aims to provide a single source for quality interactive material covering the whole spectrum of mathematics from age four to 11.
